Facts and Functions
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), or ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring compound with vitamin-like properties. CoQ10 serves dual functions in the body as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain and a lipophilic antioxidant. As a respiratory chain component, CoQ10 plays an integral role in the production of energy. As an antioxidant with widespread distribution, CoQ10 protects cells and tissues throughout the body against oxidative damage. Organs with high metabolic activity and energy demands such as the heart, kidney, liver, and muscle contain the highest concentrations of CoQ10. Although CoQ10 is endogenously synthesized and found in small amounts in both plant and animal foods, a number of factors can diminish CoQ10 stores in the body including aging, elevated free radical activity, chronic degenerative diseases, and use of medications, particularly statins. Supplemental CoQ10 restores blood and tissue levels and exerts a beneficial effect in a variety of conditions associated with impaired mitochondrial function and increased oxidative stress.
Advantages
This product contains the pure, natural, trans form of coenzyme Q10. This is the form utilized in clinical studies showing benefit from coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble nutrient and has been formulated in softgel capsules with vitamin E and d-limonene oil.
