Why is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Needed?
Over 600,000 women undergo a hysterectomy annually. According to the National Women’s Health Information Center, one in three women in the US has had a hysterectomy by age 60. Combine that with all of the women in the 40+ age group that are experiencing peri/post-menopause, and you have a significant percentage of our population that is experiencing hormonal duress.
Menopause happens when the ovaries no longer produce high levels of the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. It is the permanent cessation of menstruation and reproductive capability.
A hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus. Some hysterectomies also include removal of the ovaries. Unlike natural, gradual menopause, surgically induced menopause causes an immediate decline or cessation in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone production. As a result, a woman will feel a dramatic change in her body and mind as she experiences this rapid depletion of hormones.
Hormones are the messengers in the body that travel through the blood stream to activate and/or regulate your physical and chemical functions and processes throughout all body systems. Traditionally, women have been told that they really didn’t need the hormones made by these organs at this stage of their life. However, just because your ovaries and uterus may no longer need these hormones to function, the rest of your body does!
The Big Three Hormones Explained
Estrogen
- Stimulates the growth of tissue, such as development of breast and reproductive organs and ensures their function
- In the brain, boosts the synthesis and function of neurotransmitters that affect sleep, mood, memory, libido, and cognitive factors such as learning and attention span
- Decreases the perception of pain
- Preserves bone mass
- Helps to keep skin and hair healthy
- Preserves elasticity and moisture content of skin
- Stimulates and maintains hair growth on the head
- Increases HDL (the good cholesterol)
- Dilates blood vessels and helps to prevent plaque formation in blood vessel walls
Progesterone
- Produced mainly in the ovaries, but the adrenal glands, peripheral nerves, and brain cells produce lesser amounts
- Ensures development and function of breasts and female reproductive tract
- Binds to certain receptors in the brain to produce a calming and sedating effect
- Helps to improve sleep
- Helps kidneys remove sodium
- Enhances insulin sensitivity
- Enhances the function of thyroid hormones and body’s metabolism
- Helps to build bone
- Benefits the cardiovascular system by blocking plaque formation in the blood vessels and lowering triglyceride levels
- Can increase libido
- Contributes to the efficient use of fat as a source of energy
Testosterone
- Mainly manufactured in the ovaries, but smaller amounts made by adrenal glands
- Enhances libido and sexual response
- Boosts mood and energy level
- Strengthens muscle and bone
- Assists brain function and promotes a sense of confidence and well-being
- Enhances stamina and motivation
- Influences restful sleep
- Provides a protective effect against cardiovascular disease
It’s About Balance
A woman whose hormones are balanced will feel more energetic and healthy. Hormones also help to prevent chronic diseases and can slow down the effects of aging.
All hormones throughout the body act synergistically with each other. In fact, if the sex hormones are out of balance, it’s common for others to be as well. Because of this, dietary issues, and lifestyle choices, the providers at Renewed Vitality always take a holistic approach to balancing your hormones.
Our comprehensive lab tests include looking at all hormone functions, along with other health markers, and vitamin levels so that we can help you become healthy and feel better again. We are able to have meaningful discussions regarding other factors which can contribute to hormone imbalances with regard to nutrition, lifestyle, and exercise.
