What does your immune system have to do with the holidays? Well… everything!
Does this image look familiar? For many of us, the holidays can be a more stressful-than-usual time! There are all those gifts to buy — and you’ve got to be sure you pick the right ones. And of course, once you have them, you stay up late into the night wrapping them — not to mention moving around that Elf on a Shelf before the kids wake up every day!
Then there are the holiday parties… so many of them… with so much tempting food and drink. And we can’t forget to mention the stress of finishing up those last-minute work “emergencies,” so you have time to enjoy the holidays with your family.
All of this added stress can wreak havoc on your immune system. That, in turn, can set you up for those cold and flu bugs that seem to “magically” show up this time of year. But fear not: We can show you a few ways to strengthen your immunity so you remain healthy throughout all the holiday shenanigans!
4 Simple Immune System Boosting Tips
Tip #1: Get Plenty of Sleep
We know it’s tough to get enough sleep during hectic times like these, but it’s well worth planning out how you will optimize your sleep schedule. Set up a time each day where, no matter what, you go to bed. If something isn’t complete, don’t sweat it: That task will still be there tomorrow, but with quality sleep, you’ll be able to handle it so much better. Tip #2: Take a “Holiday Time-out”
With so much going on all day, you may think taking time away from your to-do list is a near impossibility. But even a short amount — as little as five minutes — can make a significant difference to your stress levels. Try taking a few “holiday time-outs” during the day. Step away from your work, sit quietly, and breathe deeply. If you enjoy meditating, take a five-minute meditation break. Or simply walk to another area of the house, away from other humans, and have a bit of “me” time with a comfy chair and a cup of tea or coffee. You’ll return refreshed — both body and mind — and ready to tackle what’s on your plate.
Tip #3: Walk!
Speaking of time-outs, here’s the best one: Walking. You may not have time for your regular exercise routine during the holidays, but you can always take a few minutes out for a walk. Walking has so many benefits for your immune system, your metabolism, and your overall well-being. If you can walk outside in nature for 10 or 15 minutes, that’s great — but even getting up and walking around the house or office for a few minutes will benefit you. It’s all about moving your body. You’ll see the stress start to melt away after a few minutes of walking. But here’s a caveat: Leave your cell phone at home!
Tip #4: Eat Healthy Between the Get-togethers
We know you’ll be tempted by all those yummy holiday foods — and that’s fine! Don’t beat yourself up if you enjoy a good nosh now and again. The trick is to eat healthy in between the holiday events. That way you’re eating healthy, whole foods with plenty of nutrition most of the time. And what you do most of the time is far more important than what you do now and again. And eating healthy also includes taking immune-boosting supplements — even more important during this stressful time of year!
