Semaglutide Medical Weight Loss
What is Ozempic® and why is it getting so much attention?
Semaglutide, sold under the brand names Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Rybelsus®, is FDA-approved in adults for weight management and treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. All of our weight loss programs are medically supervised. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by mimicking the action of a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and appetite. By activating GLP-1 receptors, semaglutide can:
- help reduce hunger
- increase feelings of fullness
- slow down the rate of the stomach emptying
We have seen semaglutide work in patients who have otherwise struggled with weight loss even with strict diet and exercise. Semaglutide can be used alone. But, it is most effective as part of a comprehensive weight loss program. This includes exercise, behavioral changes, and diet alterations. Semaglutide is unlike other weight loss programs. It is used for long-term weight loss management.
While this drug is considered a “blockbuster”, it’s not right for everyone. Contraindications include:
- those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have active gallbladder disease
- a history of pancreatitis or who currently have pancreatitis
- type 1 diabetes
- those who have a history of medullary thyroid cancer
If semaglutide isn’t right for you, there are several other weight loss programs available. Using our comprehensive functional medicine approach, we can address the underlying causes of weight gain. This includes optimizing nutrition and incorporating lifestyle modifications to promote sustainable weight loss. Schedule a free consultation with our new patient coordinator. She’s happy to explain our protocols in more detail and schedule an appointment for you if you are interested in losing weight.

How Does Our Medical Weight Loss Program Work?
Semaglutide works in two ways. First, it delays your stomach emptying. When food takes longer to leave your stomach, there is more inhibition in your appetite. Second, it increases insulin sensitivity by suppressing glucagon. It also reduces how much glucose your liver makes. Simply put, you will be less hungry, and your body will make less sugar, resulting in weight loss.
The duration of treatment with semaglutide varies from person to person, depending on individual health and wellness goals. The length of this therapy is dictated by lifestyle, how fast your body responds to the treatment, and your goal weight.
“I recently had an appointment with N.P. Taylor Troup. I traveled from out of state because I believed that Renewed Vitality was the answer to many of my unanswered medical questions. Taylor was amazing! She was thorough, caring, a great listener, and encourager. She explained everything in detail and designed a plan of action to tackle issues that have been plaguing me for years! I left the appointment very hopeful…more so than I have been, in a VERY long time! Thank you, Taylor!” – Phyllis N.
Why Do We Have Great Results?
Our patients have impressive results because we combine semaglutide with other medical interventions. This includes a full thyroid and hormone workup. We have found that it is incredibly difficult to lose weight when you are hormonally unbalanced. By correcting abnormalities we can further enhance your body’s ability to burn fat and keep the weight off.
The Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People With Obesity (STEP) trials has shown the efficacy of semaglutide for the treatment of obesity. Patients receiving semaglutide lost a mean of 6% of their weight by week 12, and 12% of their weight by week 28. Our patients typically lose one to 3 pounds per week. This varies depending on a variety of factors. Patients who tolerate the medication with little to no side effects and those with more fat mass to lose can see greater results.
