Description
Primary Uses
-Supports cardiovascular health
-Supports neurotransmitter synthesis and critical enzyme reactions
-Maintains healthy homocysteine levels
Facts and Functions
Folate is a B-vitamin that is naturally present in many foods. The other name it is known by is B-9. Folate helps maintain homocysteine levels within the normal range, which promotes cardiovascular health. People with elevated homocysteine levels also have a greater risk of cognitive decline. Unlike ordinary folic acid, 5-MTHF( the active form of folate found in Optimized Folate) is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. This is especially important for people with cognitive difficulties because it enhances the synthesis of acetylcholine in the brain — the neurotransmitter associated with memory. 5-MTHF has been shown to dramatically raise red blood cell folate levels compared with folic acid supplementation. It is critical for women who are pregnant to have adequate intake of folate because it has a protective effect against the development of neural tube defects (NTDs), specifically, anencephaly and spina bifida in unborn children.
Advantages
L-5-MTHF is an active, methylated form of folate. It requires no additional metabolic steps to be used by the body, thus it is often the preferred choice for those with absorption.
